Real Madrid are heading into one of the most important matches of their season as they will take on Barcelona in the first El Clasico of the season this weekend. Los Blancos’ 1-1 draw against Sevilla in the previous league match means that there is only a one-point gap between the two teams at the moment.

It goes without saying that Real Madrid cannot afford to lose to Barcelona this weekend. Otherwise, they will lose a lot of the positive momentum that they have built up at the start of the campaign.

It will be very interesting to see Carlo Ancelotti’s lineup against Barcelona. The Italian coach raised a lot of eyebrows with his selection vs Atletico Madrid and lost that game 3-1. Hopefully, the same mistakes won’t be repeated.

One of the controversial decisions on that day was starting Toni Kroos and Luka Modric together. And it looks like there will be no place for the Croatian hero against Barcelona.

Real Madrid player set to be benched against Barcelona in El Clasico

As reported by AS (via Madrid Xtra), Modric will be on the bench vs Barcelona. He played 94 minutes yesterday against SC Braga.

Modric played the entire game against SC Braga, with Real Madrid winning 2-1. If he is indeed left on the bench against Barcelona, the Croatian is expected to be disappointed. It is starting to look like he is no longer counted upon when it comes to the big matches.

At 38 years of age, this was to be expected sooner or later. That being said, that won’t make it easier for Modric, who had been a key part of Real Madrid’s plans for over a decade. There has been speculation about him leaving the club in the future and if things do not improve soon, that seems pretty much inevitable.
