A lot of Real Madrid fans were caught off guard when Karim Benzema decided to bring an end to his 14-year run at Santiago Bernabeu in order to join Al-Ittihad. The initial expectations had been that he would stay for another season by extending his contract but that was not to be and Los Blancos have not really filled his void in the squad till now.

On the other hand, Benzema’s adventure with Al-Ittihad has not gotten off to the greatest of starts either. The club signed top names over the summer but their results have not matched expectations.

Al-Ittihad currently sit at 5th in the league table. And manager Nuno Espirito Santo was recently shown the exit door. On the other hand, according to stats from Transfermarkt, Benzema has scored 9 goals and provided 4 assists in 13 appearances for the club so far.

Al-Ittihad currently find themselves in search of a new manager. And it looks like one former Real Madrid boss is in their sights.

Former Real Madrid manager could join Benzema’s Al-Ittihad

As reported by AS, Julen Lopetegui is in the orbit of Al-Ittihad. The club want the former Real Madrid manager to replace Santo.

Lopetegui was Real Madrid manager for only a short period of time and could not impress at Santiago Bernabeu. He did spend more than three years at Sevilla and had a short but relatively successful spell with Wolves most recently. He decided to leave the Premier League club over the summer as there were differences of opinion on some key topics between them.

It is believed that Lopetegui views the Premier League as his number one target. But a lot will depend on the potential offer from Al-Ittihad as well. Could we see Benzema reunite with the former Real Madrid manager in the near future? Only time shall tell.
