Manchester United appear to have taken several steps back this season. After a solid debut campaign for Erik ten Hag, hopes were that the club would continue their progress and potentially even look to put up a title challenge after high-profile additions over the summer. Instead, they have struggled and most of their wins have come against teams in the bottom half of the Premier League. Amidst all this, it looks like they are eyeing a player also linked with Real Madrid.

Real Madrid need to add to their options up top. Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo might have impressed in the last two games but overall, they are not having great seasons, and do not look suited to their more central roles.

Thus, it would make sense for Real Madrid to sign a striker. Mehdi Taremi of FC Porto is someone they have been linked with. But unfortunately, they are not the only ones who seem to be in the race to sign him.

As reported by TEAMtalk, according to reports in Italy, Ten Hag is putting the wheels in motion for Manchester United to sign Taremi in the January window. It would take a €10 million (£8.7 million) transfer fee to sign the 31-year-old from FC Porto.

Taremi has been one of the most prolific strikers in Europe in recent years. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 31 goals and provided 14 assists in 51 appearances last season.

But his current deal runs out next summer. As a result, FC Porto are believed to be open to the idea of parting ways with him for a bargain transfer fee in January rather than see him walk out as a free agent for nothing months later.

Once again, Taremi would be a short-term solution for Real Madrid. But he could be a smart addition, just like Joselu has proven to be.
