A video surfaced on social media recently of Sergio Ramos signing autographs for fans. In it, it appears that the Spaniard refuses to sign a Real Madrid jersey. Of course, this led to quite a bit of controversy online, as many of the club’s fans were not happy with the actions of the legendary former captain who spent 16 years at Santiago Bernabeu.
Ramos joined Real Madrid in 2005 for a €27 million transfer fee, a then record for a Spanish defender. Clearly, the club had a lot of faith in his potential because he was still a teenager and had only made 50 appearances at the senior level.
Ramos would go on to have a brilliant career at Real Madrid and established himself as one of the best defenders ever. The Spaniard won a lot of trophies in the Royal White jersey but will always be remembered for his 93rd-minute equaliser against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final, which ultimately led to La Decima.
Ramos returned to Spanish football this season, joining boyhood club Sevilla. Many thought it was because of this reason that he did not want to sign the jersey of a ‘rival’ team. But that was not the case at all.
Sergio Ramos explains why he refused to sign Real Madrid jersey
Ramos cleared the matter on Twitter himself. He wrote:
"“Before that moment I had already signed about 6 Real Madrid shirts. And then there are people who auction them or sell them on the Internet…”"
So, Ramos has no problem signing Real Madrid jerseys. But he had already signed quite a few of them on the day. And it is also worth remembering that many people who are looking for autographs of famous players are not fans at all.
At the end of the day, Ramos will always remain a Real Madrid legend. This incident does go on to show though that fans must always wait for the players to clear up matters themselves rather than jumping to conclusions.
