Competition for places is always very high at Real Madrid and that is how it should be. It is the biggest club in the world for a reason and fans expect to win every game. Carlo Ancelotti has one of the toughest jobs in football, meeting those expectations, with the lack of depth in his squad and the long list of key players out injured.

Despite that, his Real Madrid side has managed to continue delivering results on a consistent basis and deserve immense credit for that. Whenever a starter has gotten injured, someone has been ready to step in and fill the void expertly.

Andriy Lunin has received a lost of praise recently. Kepa Arrizabalaga got injured during the warm-up ahead of the match against SC Braga.

Lunin was brought in as a replacement and saved an early penalty in that very game to announce that he was ready to perform when called upon. With Kepa still out injured, the 24-year-old has gotten a bit of a run in the team and impressed a lot of people with his performances. Yet, when the Spaniard returns to fit, he looks set to take his place back in the starting XI.

There has been speculation about Lunin’s future. His current deal runs out next summer and with him never getting a real run in the starting XI, it would be understandable if he chose to leave.

As reported by The Athletic, that would be of no concern to the coaching staff. They prefer Real Madrid to negotiate with Chelsea next summer to keep Kepa.

Kepa arrived in the summer on loan from Chelsea, when Thibaut Courtois was put on the sidelines for the long term with a torn ACL. The Spaniard has impressed with the first-team gloves himself, pulled off a number of key saves and there is talk of signing him on a permanent basis soon. Of course, if that was to happen, one would expect Lunin to leave in search of consistent playing time somewhere else.
