Real Madrid needed to sign a striker in the summer. Karim Benzema left the club out of the blue to join Al-Ittihad. The original expectation had been for the Frenchman to extend his contract by one more year. Mariano Diaz, their only other recognised centre-forward last season, also departed with his deal running out.

That left Real Madrid in a sticky situation. They were linked with a number of high-profile strikers but ultimately decided on a short-term solution by bringing in Joselu on a season-long loan from Espanyol.

One of the strikers Real Madrid had been linked with was Harry Kane. But he ended up at Bayern Munich instead, and the Englishman has been out of the world for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

He might very well be the best striker in the world right now. According to stats from Transfermarkt, Kane has scored 22 goals and provided 7 assists in 18 appearances and 1518 minutes of football for Bayern Munich this season.

Those are staggering numbers, even for the England national team captain. He is averaging a goal contribution every 52 minutes for Bayern Munich.

Yes, Kane is 30 years of age but signing him would have handed Real Madrid the best front three in European football by some distance. Can you imagine the England captain flanked by Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo? And Jude Bellingham playing behind them in the number 10 role!

That is the kind of team that can win multiple Champions League titles. But Real Madrid let the opportunity slip.

Real Madrid still need to sign their long-term number 9. Joselu has made the most of the opportunities that he has been given but he is 33 years of age and only on a season-long loan deal from Espanyol. At the moment, they have no other recognised striker in their first-team squad.
