Real Madrid need to bring in reinforcements in several positions across the pitch in upcoming transfer windows. Right-back certainly has to be counted amongst them. Dani Carvajal is a club legend but he is no longer the player that he was in his prime. On the other hand, Los Blancos do not have anyone in their current squad who can take his place in the team.
Sooner or later, Real Madrid will need to sign someone who can be Carvajal’s long-term successor. And they have been linked with quite a few right-backs in recent times.
Jeremie Frimpong is one of them. He came up through the youth ranks at Manchester City but it is at Celtic that he got his chance at the senior level. He certainly took it and Bayer Leverkusen ended up signing him from the Hoops.
Frimpong has gone from strength to strength since then and is amongst the best wingbacks in world football today. It was a bit of a surprise when he stayed put at Bayer Leverkusen this summer despite being linked with some of Europe’s most prestigious clubs including Real Madrid. But it seems like only a matter of time before he is on his way out and there seems to be a pretty reasonable release clause in his current deal with the Bundesliga team.
Fabrizio Romano confirms Real Madrid target’s €40m release clause
As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Frimpong’s release clause is only valid in the summer. It is €40 million with favourable payment terms.
Frimpong is one of the biggest reasons behind Bayer Leverkusen’s excellent start to the season, as they sit atop the Bundesliga table. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 6 goals and provided 7 assists in 17 appearances in the ongoing campaign so far.
That is an excellent return for a wingback. Now, it remains to be seen if Real Madrid make a move next summer.
