Manchester City and Liverpool have been the two best teams in the Premier League for several years. A lot of that is down to the sheer brilliance of their respective managers, Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp. Sooner or later, those eras will come to an end though and one would expect them to look for a new challenge having won everything in England. But Real Madrid might end up handing them a major blow in their search for a new manager in the future.

Xabi Alonso has quickly emerged as one of the best managers in the game. It is unbelievable that when he arrived at Bayer Leverkusen in October of last year, his first top-flight job, they were relegation contenders.

Avoiding relegation with Bayer Leverkusen would have been considered a success. Instead, they finished sixth. And this time around, they are sitting atop the Bundesliga table, and are one of the best teams in Europe.

Of course, that kind of success has seen the Spaniard being linked with Europe’s biggest clubs. As reported by the Mirror, Real Madrid want to take Alonso back to the Santiago Bernabeu as coach and that would deliver a blow to the succession plans of both Liverpool and Manchester City.

Alonso has history with Real Madrid and Liverpool, having achieved a lot of success with both during his playing career. On the other hand, he had the chance to join Guardiola’s backroom staff a few years back but did not.

Alonso played under the management of some of the best managers in history during his playing career. Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, Guardiola himself at Bayern Munich, Rafa Benitez at Liverpool and Vicente del Bosque for Spain.

Alonso has all the tools required to become a top manager himself. And it looks like he will have his pick of clubs when he leaves Bayer Leverkusen.
