Real Madrid always have their stars out for the World Cup, and this summer's tournament features three huge Madrid stars who just happen to be three of the biggest stars of the entire World Cup. As a few players make their exits and many more perpare for the Round of 32, here are three bright spots and two harsh truths for the Merengues at the tournament thus far.
Kylian Mbappe looks like a team player
Kylian Mbappe came into the 2026 World Cup under the microscope, but, as always, the French national team star has brought his best for his country. But beyond the goals, Mbappe's movement off the ball, body language, and charisma have shone through, and he looks more comfortable and like a real leader for Les Bleus than he did for the Royal Whites. That is huge for Madrid as Mbappe looks to get life started under Jose Mourinho on the right track.
Fede Valverde lost the leader gene
Uruguay were the biggest embarrassment of the World Cup, and they played like total garbage all tournament long, especially against Spain in the elimination game. With every Madridista watching, Fede got hooked afte a real stinker, and he can blame Marcelo Bielsa all he wants, but Fede was the biggest flop of the tournament. He looks like a cowardly child and not like a real leader, and Mourinho is going to roast this guy when he comes back to Madrid. He has to do better.
Vinicius Junior is fulfilling his destiny
Meanwhile, after years of criticism, Vinicius Junior is showing his quality on the Brazil national team with a real coach and a better attack around him. Raphinha's injury was a blessing in diguise for the Selecao, who are much more dangerous with either Rayan or Endrick anyway. But no matter who plays, Vini Jr. is the great hope of Brazil, and he has been the Man of the Match in all three games; he is their new Neymar, the one whom all hopes rest upon.
Trent Alexander-Arnold got screwed
Thomas Tuchel really screwed up by not picking Trent Alexander-Arnold in his team. Anyone could see that coming from a mile away, but now with Reece James hurt, England are really behind the eight ball with no real right back when they could have had one of the best in the world.
Brahim Diaz is gaining value
Juventus and Luciano Spalletti are courting Brahim Diaz hard, but Real Madrid have changed their minds about selling the Moroccan international. Perhaps Jose Mourinho had a change of heart because of how well Brahim has been playing for his country at the World Cup. He has created goals in transtion from nothing with brilliant passes, and unlike Fede, he has been a real leader for his country and looks stronger on the ball in possession. He is increasing his value.
