If you feel like we've been here before, that's because we have. Many times now. On Wednesday night, for the 12th time since 2020, Real Madrid and Manchester City will go head-to-head in the Champions League.

It is the fifth successive campaign in which the pair have met in the knockout phase, with the Citizens prevailing in 2023 en route to lifting the trophy in İstanbul, while Los Blancos did the same in 2022 and 2024, as well as last season, albeit not then going all the way that time.

On top of that, it is just 91 days since the duo clashed during the league phase. Despite taking the lead through Rodrygo, los Merengues were defeated 2-1 that night, with Nico O'Reilly equalising and then Erling Haaland converting a spot-kick. Partially as a result of this, the record 15-time champions of Europe come into this latest encounter as underdogs, but here are three players who will need to star if they're going to knock Man City out.

Thibaut Courtois

If Real Madrid harbour any hopes of progressing through this tie, they'll likely need Thibaut Courtois to produce plenty of world class saves, something he is very much capable of. The 33 year old is pretty indisputably the best goalkeeper in world football, boasting the third-best save % in this season's Champions League, behind only David Raya and Alisson.

Meantime, in La Liga, Courtois ranks fourth for this metric, having been far busier than many may expect, forced into three saves at Balaídos on Friday night, preventing an xG figure of 0.91. Thus, in short, Álvaro Arbeloa's team are far from watertight at the back, so will be reliant on Courtois to prevent Manchester City from cruising to victory.

Antonio Rüdiger vs Erling Haaland

Another key figure in Real Madrid's back line will be Antonio Rüdiger. The German international is out of contract at the Bernabéu this summer, widely expected to leave the club, having played just 1,184 minutes across all competitions this season due to a knee and hamstring issue.

Back fit again now, he has started five of the last six matches, and will be key to los Blancos' hopes in this tie. Rüdiger is at his best when he has a big, powerful, physical centre-forward to mark and, well, he'll certainly have that up against a well-rested Haaland. The pair have enjoyed plenty of one vs one duels whenever these two juggernauts have clashed in recent times, a battle the German relishes:

"It's personal for me as a defensive player against a super striker like Haaland"

As already mentioned, Real Madrid are far from watertight at the back, keeping just two clean sheets across their last nine outings. Los Blancos are without the injured Éder Militão and David Alaba, while Trent Alexander-Arnold continues to be, how can we put this diplomatically, a complete defensive liability. Thus, this all adds to Rüdiger's importance; if he doesn't play well, they don't have much chance.

Vinícius Júnior

As well as being light at the back, Arbeloa is set to be missing key personnel in attack too. Rodrygo, who has scored more goals (5) against Manchester City than anyone else, is sidelined long-term due to an ACL rupture. Meantime, having sat out the last three matches, Kylian Mbappé will not feature in the first leg and is a doubt for the trip to the Etihad too, after suffering a sprain in his left knee.

Thus, a huge amount of attacking onus will be on Vinícius Júnior to shine. Infamously, the club felt that the Brazilian should've been awarded the Ballon d'Or the year Rodri won it, so he'll now be looking to end a six match goal draught against Man City, having scored against them twice to date.

Most agreed that Vini Jr has not been at his best for some time now, but there are signs that he is rediscovering the old magic. He's scored three in his last four Champions League appearances, netting during both legs against Benfica, very much getting the last laugh after the abhorrent alleged racist abuse by Gianluca Prestianni in Lisbon.

Vinícius has also bagged four goals in his last five in La Liga, including a brace against Real Sociedad at the Bernabéu. So, given the absentees, he will be Real Madrid's most-likely scorer across this tie, so Arbeloa will need him to shine; with Matheus Nunes set to be Man City's right-back, that is surely an area they can exploit.
