Real Madrid started the summer transfer window with a keen interest in bringing in a new center midfielder to either compete with Aurelien Tchouameni or replace Eduardo Camavinga and/or Tchouameni in the squad.
Ever since Toni Kroos's retirement in 2024 when he left football at the very top of his game, Real Madrid have struggled badly to control the middle of the park and have not won a single meaningful trophy, even after adding Kylian Mbappe for free to a team that won the Champions League and La Liga in the 2023/24 season.
Losing Luka Modric last summer did not help mattes either. Neither Camavinga nor Tchouameni have progressed well in the last few seasons, as they are still closer to good than truly great. Both were very disappointing last season as Real struggled to control matches, especially when they were facing the bigger opponents.
Enzo Fernandez can offer a lot to Madrid
Yet neither player will be moving this summer, as of right now. Jose Mourinho has not told Eduardo Camavinga he is safe, but the left footed Frenchman has no interest in leaving; he wants to fight for his spot. Meanwhile, Mourinho told Tchouameni he is crucial and trusted, with Real rewarding him with a new contract extension through the 2030/31 season.
But for many Real Madrid fans, they were hoping for one of two big stars in the Premier League to join them - and both No. 6's have been vital to leading their teams to the World Cup Final. Manchester City's Rodri of Spain and Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez from Argentina are world class, technical No. 6's who can elevate an entire team and control a match on their own.
Both are expensive, though. Rodri will be a free agent next season, while Chelsea were asking for 120 million pounds in order for Real Madrid or anyone else to sign the 25 year old Argentinian international gunning for his second straight World Cup win.
Although Enzo is pricy, the reward of winning La Liga and the Champions League combined in just one season is worth a lot more than 120 million pounds, which would be the fee to have Enzo in his prime years for potentially up to seven seasons in total.
That is something Real Madrid have to think about. Jose Mourinho has made Aurelien Tchouameni feel important, but everyone knows he still wants another top midfielder for Madrid to solidify the defense and potentially add another technical threat on the ball. Enzo is a far more accomplished player than Tchou, as the World Cup has shown, and not spending on him could be a move Real live to regret next year.
