Real Madrid are busy trying to overhaul their midfield this summer transfer window, having already overhauled the defense with the signings of Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, and Marc Cucurella to either start or immediately compete for starting spots under new manager Jose Mourinho.
Given all the midfielders Real Madrid are still linked to after signing Manchester City star Benardo Silva, including Mateus Fernandes and Enzo Fernandez, it stands to reason that Mourinho is not entirely impressed with the jobs that Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni are doing at the base of the Real Madrid midfield.
It seems as though Tchouameni has already been planning on a potential move away from Real Madrid, and fans may feel betrayed about this sequence of events. Even before that controversial incident in which Tchouameni sent Fede Valverde to the hospital, it seems like the Frenchman was already in talks to leave the club.
It is up to Jose Mourinho now
According to a report from Rodra P of ESPN Deportes, via the Madrid Zone, Aurelien Tchouameni had actually engaged in contract talks with Manchester United, who have been very interested in signing the player alongside Casemiro - you know, the Real Madrid legend Tchou has unsuccessfully replaced after being signed by the club for 80 million euros from Monaco in 2022.
Manchester United are looking at various midfield options themselves, including Mateus Fernandes, who is one of the top transfer targets on the Jose Mourinho wish list. Mourinho won't be mad about Tchouameni leaving for Man United, especially if it can secure him Fernandes instead of the Red Devils nabbing him from West Ham United, but hearing that Tchouameni never wanted to be there even before he distorted the locker room may seal the player's fate.
As it stands, Mourinho has not made any decisions on Tchouameni or Eduardo Camavinga. He has already unsprisingly told the insubordinate Dani Ceballos to kick rocks in free agency, but no such declaration has been made behind the scenes to either French midfielder, regardless of all the links to other midfielders - or how disappointing the duo were in the 2025/26 season.
If Manchester United and Tchouameni want each other, then an official approach needs to happen soon. The meeting between the two, per Rodra, was merely to gauge the situation, but now that it has been months later and in the summer, it may not be long before these rumors heat up. It will be interesting to see what Mourinho's stance is.
