Real Madrid are preparing for a major squad overhaul this summer and have smartly identified the defense as the area that needs the most fixing ASAP. The backline has been leaking in goals for fun over the last two years and with the departures of Dani Carvajal and David Alaba as well as the constant injuries to Eder Militao and Dean Huijsen and it is obvious the reinforcements are desperetly needed. The club has been linked with pretty much every defender imaginable, however they just received a huge update on their long standing number one target.
As being reported by Fabrizio Romano on X, Real Madrid has a verbal agreement in place with Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate who will be leaving the Premier League side as a free agent this summer. The two sides have agreed on a four year deal to be signed following the presidential elections should Florentino Perez get re-elected.
Real Madrid nearly over the line with Konate deal
The Konate-Real Madrid saga has had a number of twists and turns over the last year but it now finally seems to be coming to an end. Just weeks ago it looked like the Frenchman was close to extending his contract at Anfield, however the two sides couldn't agree on terms and ultimately it was confirmed he will be leaving as a free agent. Other clubs like Chelsea and even Saudi Arabia's Al-Ittihad tried to capitalize on his departure, but there was only one destination that was ever going to happen, that being Real Madrid.
Los Blancos has been linked with a move for Konate for well over a year now, playing the long game and being patient waiting for this exact moment to snatch him up on a free transfer. The 27-year-old will follow the same path his former Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold took last summer, leaving Anfield for the Bernabeu as a free agent no doubt leaving a sour taste in Liverpool fans' mouths again.
As mentioned earlier Real Madrid needs to reinforce their defense if they hope to get back to being the top team in Europe and getting the Konate deal over the line as the first transfer of the summer would be the best way to start their rebuild. Kotante is exactly the kind of defender they need and whether partnered with Militao, Huijsen or even Antonio Rudiger would bring stability back to a shaky backline.
Konate will seemingly just be the start of Real's defensive rebuild with the club also looking to potentially sign another central defender as well as a left and right back. As mentioned earlier the winner of the upcoming presidential elections will play a part in whether this signing officially gets over the line but no matter who wins, it would be a no brainer to finalize this deal and not let the Frenchman slip through their fingers.
