The insubordinate Real Madrid locker room has been a much bigger storyline than anything that has happened on the pitch this season, and for any seasoned Madridista who was there all the way back in the Galactico era, they know that this is the hallmark of any failed season at this great club.

There has been nothing great about this squad in 2025/26. The great players have been massive disappointments too busy with their own egos, while the backups and squad players have actually been even worse. They have been shielded by the attention on the superstars while they themselves have the egos of superstars and the performances of second division players.

Take, for example, new 50 million euro signing Alvaro Carreras. The man was signed for a premium price from Benfica to be the new starting left back, with Real Madrid knowingly overpaying because they believed in him. Carreras started the season reasonably well but faded into an abyss, dogging it in big games and getting toasted defensively, with Michael Olise exposing him as a mediocre player.

Alvaro Carreras burned himself

And that game against Bayern Munich was Carreras's response to Alvaro Arbeloa already benching him for Ferland Mendy and even Fran Garcia - the same players they had before that they spent 50 million euros on Alvaro to be an upgrade over - because he was already showing major signs of weakness.

All Carreras did after that was sulk and join Raul Asencio, Dani Ceballos, and Dani Carvajal as a rumored group of Spanish moles who insulted Arbeloa from the bench and made the team even more miserable instead of, you know, playing better.

Well, the reckoning has come. Because in addition to Dani Carvajal, Alvaro Carreras has also been left off even the preliminary 2026 World Cup squad for the Spanish national team. Whereas Dean Huijsen, Fran Garcia, and Gonzalo Garcia could all make it to the World Cup for the reigning European Champions, Carreras and Carvajal 100 percent will not.

Fran making it in over Carreras is another sign that Luis de la Fuente and the decision makers for the Spanish national team are paying attention and know what they are doing. It is a rare twist of justice in the Real Madrid season for the hard working Fran to get his shot at redemption, whlie the lazy and insolent players who have undermined this team like Carreras get a taste of their own medicine. He wanted the World Cup, and by his own hands, he lost it.
