Real Madrid need to take a good, long look at themselves. They simply were not good enough. Apart from Thibaut Courtois, no one showed the bite and the urge needed to win such a crucial tie against Arsenal.
The first leg was bad enough - losing 3-0 in the first leg seemed like a recipe for disaster in itself. They then talked about a remontada to gain aura points, which they not only failed to achieve, they actually faced a bigger deficit by the end of the second leg than what they started off with.
That is embarrassing for a club of Real Madrid's stature. Real Madrid needed to do much more than they actually did, and Arsenal, to give full credit to them, beat Real Madrid in multiple ways. They rose to the occasion at the Bernabeu more than the team whose stadium it is.
They were calm and composed. They were brilliantly organised, they defended well and went forward with patience and conviction whenever they saw an opportunity.
Carlo Ancelotti was outcoached in Real Madrid's loss to Arsenal, and that is nothing new
Carlo Ancelotti was outcoached. Properly outcoached. There is no saving grace for him. Ancelotti was twice outcoached by Mikel Arteta. He has also been outcoached by Arne Sot, Hansi Flick, Ernesto Valverde, and so many others this season.
However, the match against Arteta's men would have been something that people would want to see an improvement in. This would have been the match to show what he can do as a coach, but Arsenal's brilliance showed how tactically inept Real Madrid were, and that is mostly down to Ancelotti's decline.
Obviously, not everything is his fault. He was not playing on the pitch, but he was the one who had the opportunity to change things tactically on so many occasions, and yet, he kept making the same mistakes as he has all season.
Real Madrid looked absolutely wasteful and useless in attack. David Alaba struggled a lot in defense. I just did not see a single point of improvement apart from the intensity in the first few minutes. The Bernabeu can only do so much. The fans can only do so much. If you play the way Real Madrid played, if you go into the game without a gameplan, there is no way you win.
Ancelotti talked about the things that they have tried for the Arsenal game in training. I did not see any of that. They looked desperate, impatient and inconsistent.
There was no structure, no tactics, nothing. And that should be the last straw for Ancelotti at Real Madrid. If it is not, then people need to start talking about the mismanagement on an even higher level.
