Following an exceptional season with Manchester City and Spain, Rodri became only the third player not named Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon d’Or in 2024. However, following the Spaniard’s ACL injury, we’re sure that he won’t be retaining the honor. So, who are the frontrunners to become the midfielder’s successor?

There was undeniable drama surrounding the announcements this year with a stronger majority in world football sold to the idea of Vinicius Junior lifting the coveted prize. However, as things panned out, the Brazilian had to settle for the second spot following which his famous tweet took center stage.

“I’ll do it 10x if I have to. They’re not ready," said Vinicius Jr. Well, we’re not quite sure how that’s going for Vini, but we do present you with an early power ranking for the race toward the golden ball. Let’s find out where our Madrid boys rank at this stage of the season among the world’s bests.

10. Pedri (FC Barcelona and Spain)

The Andres Iniesta re-gen, as Pedri is generally known in Catalonia, has returned to his best in 2024-25. He has been central to Barca’s business in LaLiga and the Champions League. The 22-year-old has seven goals and six assists for club and country this season. While that could come off as an average record, Pedri’s influence on the pitch is something that makes him worthy of consideration.

Thanks to his Spanish compatriot, the era of flashy forwards dominating football’s most prestigious individual award has come to an end. But we can’t see an unheralded midfielder win the prize twice in a row, can we? Moreover, if Barca do go all the way in the season, Pedri’s nemesis in this race could be some of his own teammates.

9. Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid and England)

After conquering world football in his first season with Real Madrid, Jude Bellingham had to endure a long wait to return to scoring ways. Although he wasn’t scoring, he owed up to his duties doing the dirty work and working hard off the ball for Carlo Ancelotti. He was also instrumental in Real Madrid controlling games. However, thanks to a late license to attack, Bellingham is slowly and steadily coming out of the shadow of his own self from last season.

The Englishman has racked up 15 goals and 13 assists for club and country this season and is finally looking like the main man in Madrid’s midfield. In charge of operating the engine room, Bellingham has looked instrumental to Don Carlo’s plans. Real Madrid, almost often, lack a gear when they are without their number five. Two trophies, some great numbers, and a good chunk of the season left could elevate hopes for the 21-year-old.
