Real Madrid's 1-0 win over Benfica will be remembered for an ugly incident that occured after Vinicius Junior's stunning winner in the second half. The Brazilian accused Argentine winger Gianluca Prestianni of racism moments after riling up the home fans and opposition with his celebration.

Purely focusing on the visitors' performance it was a great night for Alvaro Arbeloa's men. They took advantage in their Champions League playoff and a 1-0 lead back to the Bernabeu next week.

Arbeloa couldn't have asked for much more from his troops and his defense were faultless. There was pressure on Dean Huijsen to impress ahead of tonight's game amid a frustrating start to his Madrid career.

Benfica 0-1 Real Madrid: Huijsen's best night in Los Merengues colors

There were reports suggesting Huijsen would likely be dropped when Antonio Rudiger returned from injury. Raul Asencio was suspended for tonight's game, meaning the Spaniard was selected alongside the veteran German center-back.

Huijsen didn't put a foot wrong and played an important role in the victory at the Estadio da Luz. He made five tackles, made nine clearances, four recoveries and won all five of his ground duels.

It was the perfect way for the 20-year-old to answer his critics and hit back at suggestions he's not good enough for Madrid. The Spanish youngster arrived at the Bernabeu from Bournemouth last summer but had made a worrying start to life in the Spanish capital.

Huijsen's display didn't go unnoticed by fans and one pointed out that this was exactly why he was signed:

"Dean Huijsen today showed the world why Real Madrid signed him for €60m, why multiple EPL clubs were after him, why DLF rates him so highly for Spain. Rock Solid."

The Spaniard made his 27th appearance of the season and reminded many why Madrid spent heavily on his signature. He will now be tasked with continuing in such fashion starting with a trip to Osasuna on Saturday.

Rudiger also impresses

Huijsen looks more comfortable alongside Rudiger and the German's experience is clearly having a positive impact. He was equally as instrumental for Los Blancos and put in the kind of performance that has made him a hero at the Bernabeu.

Alan Shearer gave a glowing verdict of the former Chelsea man's display. He said on Amazon Prime Sport (via Madrid Xtra):

“Real Madrid’s defence have given nothing away, the big man, Rüdiger at the back was exceptional.”

Rudiger has endured an injury-ridden season and his future isn't certain at Madrid. His contract expires in June and he's been linked with a return to the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur.

If the 32-year-old continues in such fashion as his defensive dominance tonight, a contract extension is a must. He is a leader and can help the likes of Huijsen in their development.
