In addition to handing superlatives for the best players, many in the media also like to give the worst players of the World Cups and hand "awards" for the biggest flops. Despite scoring three goals and taking a lot of literal and figurative attention away from his Portuguese teammates, even his own media threw Cristiano Ronaldo under the bus by naming him one of the biggest flops of the tournament.
Now, Brazilian media outlet Ge Globo have joined in, via Planeta do Futebol, placing Ronaldo as the main striker in their XI of the tournaments Team of Disappointments, even though other strikers like Arsenal's Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz were even worse, for example.
The Brazilian outlet did not spare its own countrymen, though, and showing its poor taste in picks, they placed former Real Madrid right back Danilo in the team as a third center back, even though Danilo actually had a great tournament for Brazill; he was certainly much better than Gabriel Magalhaes, who somehow escaped the team.
Cristiano Ronaldo keeps getting snubbed
But Cristiano Ronaldo was not the only great player with a Real Madrid link to make Ge Globo's worst of the World Cup team. Casemiro earned a spot, too, though Cristiano's former teammate and the former Real Madrid legend did indeed play well below his standard at the base of the Selecao midfield.
Other notables were Fede Valverde, the Real Madrid star who flopped badly for Uruguay, who could have had half the team of the tournament's worst flops themselves. Luis Diaz felt like another undeserving pick after playing OK for Colombia, while Fernando Muslera and Cristiano's Portuguese teammate Vitinha were more than obvious inclusions.
It is bizarre, though, that Portugal's Ruben Dias and especially Bruno Fernandes did not make the list after being two of the worst players in the tournament overall - forget just being even the biggest disappointments.
Once again, Real Madrid fans have to feel infuriated at the disrespect towards their club's biggest legend, as Cristiano faces all the pressure from the media and the criticism when he did not even play poorly and there were many, may others on his own team who were worse.
As for Fede, he has even more to answer for than Casemiro and Cristiano, because unlike those two who are in MLS and the Saudi Pro League, respectively, Valverde is still at the elite level for Real Madrid. He must do better.
