Real Madrid striker Carlos Espí has been called up by the Spanish national team to replace Ferran Torres in the squad for the remaining two games in the current international break. Torres picked up an injury, which meant Luis De La Fuente had to bring in another player for him, and out of so many options that he had, he chose Espi as the player for the role.
It definitely helped the Spaniard's case that Espí scored four goals and assisted two more just the night before he was called up for the Spanish national team. He scored those goals for Spain's under-21 team in a 13-0 thrashing of San Marino.
It was a completely dominant performance from them, and it is also exactly why Espi has received the nod to play his first minutes for the first team, for the senior team, for Spain.
This is brilliant news for all Real Madrid fans, and especially for Espí, who has already looked really good for the club in his first few games. However, it is not so good news for Gonzalo García, who left Real earlier this summer to join Fulham in the hopes of being a more prominent player and hopefully also playing more for the national team.
Gonzalo Garcia will hate the timing of this Carlos Espi call-up
Gonzalo García has been good for Fulham these last couple of months, but Fulham just have not done well enough to give him the platform he needs to be successful consistently. He has scored one Premier League goal so far this season, and while he did score against Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup, he has still not been scoring consistently because he has not had the service he wants up top.
If you look at what Espí has done in limited minutes, far fewer than what Gonzalo has mustered, he has already scored two league goals, which is more than his Spanish counterpart. It is worth noting that Gonzalo is definitely talented enough to be in Spain's national team, and one day he will be playing for them regularly.
He is that talented, and hopefully during that time, Espí and Gonzalo are battling to be Spain's number one striker. This would be the most ideal situation any Real Madrid fan could think of, but as of now, Espi is leading despite playing less than half the minutes Gonzalo has played.
You have to feel bad for Gonzalo because he was basically doing really well in limited minutes for Real Madrid last season too, but an opportunity like this never came. However, the minute he joined another team that was clearly struggling, an opportunity like this showed up, and Espi was the one who took it with both hands, rather than the Castilla graduate.
