Former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso had a rough time in the Spanish capital dealing with a level of players he has not coached yet in an environment that is exceedingly difficult for new managers, but there were many fans who believed in his vision and wish he had better backing from the club to continue his tactical ideas. More fans, though, realize that Alonso was a poor fit for the unique asks of a coach of Madrid but understand that he can be great in a different place.
After firing Liam Rosenior after a truly bizarre reign in which he quarrelled with players, like Real Madrid target Enzo Fernandes, and seemed to be more focused on increasing his own status out of insecurity rather than winning, Chelsea have set their sights on Alonso, who was the most coveted coach in world football before taking the Real Madrid job.
Chelsea will give Xabi Alonso real power
With Liverpool standing pat with Arne Slot and not going in for Alonso again, the path is set for Chelsea to hire the Spaniard as their new coach. According to a new report from Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph, Chelsea are likely to officially appoint Xabi Alonso as their new manager soon, and they intend on giving Alonso a big say in personnel decisions and set the tone for the types of players and personalities he wants in the building to shape the club. They will also reportedly make a few signings immediately this summer for Alonso.
That is exactly the kind of offering Real Madrid could not give to Alonso. Real Madrid have a more rigid power structure and tend to not give up and coming managers, even if they were former players, that kind of power and say. They didn't really even let Carlo Ancelotti dictate most of the signings he wanted, such as center backs and even Harry Kane as a Karim Benzema replacement.
Chelsea are in a spot where they need a strong manager and need to back a manager, even moreso than Real Madrid will with Jose Mourinho, an established legend (of both Chelsea and Madrid). They have run through managers at a record pace and have fallen hard since Thomas Tuchel won the Champions League before Todd Boehly's arrival, and after they shunned Enzo Maresca for daring to ask for the very reasonable demand of new center backs, they are going to change their tune with Alonso. And if they are right, they can make Real Madrid feel some regret.
