While many fans have high expectations for Xabi Alonso's first season in charge of Real Madrid, it is still very much a transition season for the club. A number of changes with the philosophy and with the squad are taking place under the new regime, and we've seen it in the early days of the season.
The biggest changes have come with the squad. Almost all of the veteran players of the old generation have departed the club and have been replaced by the newer up-and-coming generation. This new generation has enormous shoes to fill and will be expected to achieve even more glory than the last generation.
The biggest area in the squad where the transition can be noticed is in the midfield. Gone are the days of the Kroos, Casemiro, Modrić midfield trio and the club has been working to find the perfect replacement for the legendary trio.
There are several incredibly talented midfielders at Real Madrid, but coaches have struggled to find the perfect balance that the veteran trio had. A number of different combinations have been tried over the years, but nothing seems to match the chemistry and has left the club scratching their heads.
Even with all the talent already at the club, they're always assessing their options elsewhere and have their eyes on a midfield duo from the reigning world champions.
Chelsea fans won't love which two players Real Madrid wants to sign next
As being reported by Football Espana, Real Madrid are eyeing a massive double swoop for Chelsea midfield duo Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo. The duo have been one of the few bright spots for Chelsea this season and as a result they are now on the radar of Real Madrid.
Enzo has been linked with Real Madrid in the past as it is said that Florentino Perez has been an admirer of his for quite some time. The Argentine has stepped his game up this season and the club believe he could be the key to their midfield struggles.
The same goes for Caicedo, after arriving for his hefty price tag, he initially didn't match the price, however he has stamped his name as one of, if not the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League.
While signing the duo would be an absolute dream for the club and for fans, in reality, it most likely won't happen. Chelsea would easily demand a fee of well over €100 million for each player, money that Real Madrid won't want to spend. With players like Bellingham, Tchouaméni, Camavinga, and Fede Valverde in midfield, there is already more than enough talent at Xabi Alonso's disposal to find his perfect midfield balance.
