Clarence Seedorf is one of the best center midfielders of all time and knows a thing or two about winning silverware at the elite level, and though he only played for Real Madrid for four seasons, he still managed to hoist both the Champions League and La Liga trophies during his time with the Royal Whites in the late 1990s.
Now an analyst, Seedorf is one of the most insightful pundits around, and he has been delivering some real gem quotes both on the FOX broadcast and on various podcast appearances, including a recent one in which he went in depth with former Manchester United center back Rio Ferdinand on his show.
One of the topics Seedorf discussed was Kylian Mbappe, the Real Madrid striker who has been viewed as a disappointment despite leading La Liga in goals in his two seasons at the club. Real Madrid have not won any trophies, and there have been dispersions cast on the former World Cup winner for not being enough of a team player.
Other Real Madrid players need to fight more, too
And Clarence Seedorf isn't having it. In a message that Marc Cucurella, who recently said it is his job to run for the forwards, would approve of, Seedorf actually took Mbappe's Real Madrid teammates to task for not being the ones to run for him.
Seedorf said, “Mbappe? I am in awe of how he’s performing. When a guy is scoring 40 goals a season. I’m going to run for him. That was our mentality. No issues. I don’t understand the whole buzz about Mbappe not defending.”
While Kylian Mbappe could afford to give more effort on the defensive end and improve elements of his own play, what Seedorf is saying points to an issue in the locker room that has been underemphasized. As much as the star players like Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Jude Bellingham are criticized in the media because they are such big names and easy targets, there were a lot of other players in the locker room in supporting positions who displayed insubordination, ego, and a lack of effort.
Dani Ceballos, Dani Carvajal, Alvaro Carreras, Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, and still more were among the most disappointing or flat out worst players in La Liga last season. There were a lot of guys just not running hard enough or playing to the right standard, which is why Jose Mourinho has come in and cleaned house of the midfield and defense - and left the attack largely untouched.
Seedorf's message supporting Mbappe is also a message that the other Real Madrid players need to heed. Step up and work for the goal scorers.
