New Real Madrid signing Marc Cucurella has been warned by Barcelona's Dani Olmo about the perils of playing in La Liga.
Fabrizio Romano quoted Olmo on X: "Cucurella didn’t tell us anything about Real Madrid! He will have to suffer in La Liga… Against Lamine Yamal, for example."
It is an interesting revelation from Olmo that Cucurella did not speak with them about joining Real Madrid. However, it was not as if Cucurella could talk to anyone in the current Spain team about playing for Los Blancos. This is due to there being no other Real Madrid players on their roster.
Cucurella started for Spain against Cabo Verde, and Olmo came off the bench. It was a disappointing 0-0 draw for the former World Cup winners. Spanish supporters may prefer it if their players were talking more about their country than their club rivalries right now. Divisions between clubs have unravelled many talented national teams in the past.
Marc Cucurella is flying the Real Madrid flag alone in Spain's roster
The quote from Olmo appears to be a bit of friendly banter. Both players know each other from being in Barca's academy. Cucurella came through the ranks at Barca, but made just one appearance for them in the Copa del Rey.
The left-back was sent on loan to Eiber and Getafe. He then joined Getafe permanently before having spells in the Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea, most recently.
Olmo had a different path; he went to Dinamo Zagreb, then RB Leipzig, before ending up back at Barcelona. It will now be interesting to see Olmo and Cucurella face off in El Clásico. Cucurella has now been warned about Yamal, but the defender has got the better of him before.
During a Champions League group stage match last year, Cucurella managed to nullify Yamal as Chelsea beat Barcelona 3-0. Yamal was even taken off in that game in the 80th minute for Olmo. That was the only time that the two of them had played against each other in a senior club match. They have also played together for Spain on 17 occasions.
Cucurella is outnumbered in Spain's locker room as he is the only Real Madrid player. There is a big Barcelona contingent, along with Olmo, Yamal; they also have Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Gavi, Pedri, and Ferran Torres. Real Madrid supporters may be concerned by this, as the club's philosophy in the modern era has been to import big names from abroad.
