Former Real Madrid star David Beckham discussed how his teammates used to effortlessly turn around deficits while playing for the famous white shirt.
In a recent interview, Beckham was asked about his time at Real Madrid, how it was playing alongside certain profiles at the club who had seen and won almost everything there was to win.
He talked about how easy it seemed for them to win matches.
Beckham said: “I remember if we went 1-0 down, Ronaldo, Figo and the rest were laughing. I was confused, 'we are losing?' They just said, 'Don’t worry, we will score'.”
The current Real Madrid's mentality needs to change quite heavily
Real Madrid, both in recent past and some time before that, have always been a team who would dominate the big moments. From the time with Cristiano Ronaldo, to 2023 with Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr - it did not matter to them how they were playing a certain big game as long as things were close enough.
As long as they weren't down by three or four goals, the general consensus was that Real Madrid would come back and win the game. Even as recent as the 2021-22 and 2023-24 seasons, Los Blancos never looked under pressure. They were calm, and knew an opportunity would come by where they could win it all.
However, in the last couple of seasons, these things are not happening consistently - at least in the big moments, and Beckham's made people think that completely unknowingly.
By talking about how it used to be for Real Madrid back in those days, Beckham has brought to the fans' attention how the current crop of players are lacking that urgency, but also that calmness when they are facing an uphill battle.
In so many big games, Real Madrid have ended on the losing side in the last couple of years. Most of those games have been close losses. Almost all of the big, important games that Real Madrid had last time around, ended in a loss. And the moment they went behind, it seemed like a response was going to be forced.
Nothing in the last couple of years has come to this team naturally. They look a bit more nervous than a typical Real Madrid team. They struggle to keep their cool. They find it difficult to break down defenses and keep possession, even when they are the stronger team, with the better profiles.
This is not to say that the Galactico team that Beckham was a part of was exceptional. They had their flaws - a lot of them - but a lot of those flaws were how they played defensively, and the profiles they were missing.
With this Real Madrid, it is as much the mental side of things, as it is the profiles they are missing. If anything, the former feels more, because there have been so many games where the fans had no hope of a comeback even happening. In the past, it was almost never the case.
