Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen has been one of the best players for the team this season. Apart from one game where he made a really bad mistake that cost his team the win against Atletico Madrid and earned him a red card, he has been pretty much flawless all season long.
If fans remember correctly, Huijsen started his first season at Real Madrid in a similar fashion before once again faltering against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano. Then his season derailed and never really got back to how he was before.
Dean Huijsen is playing with supreme confidence this season
However, it does not seem like that one big mistake this season has made him change his ways and become less confident than he was before. That is the biggest development any Real Madrid player has taken this season because Huijsen looks like one of the best defenders in the league right now. He's playing with a certain confidence about him that fans did not even see at the start of his first season at the club, and he looks more solid than ever.
His defensive skills have improved. He is making more safe passes now than he was in previous big games, and he has generally been very reliable, which is not something that Real Madrid fans have been able to say about him in his career. Against Racing Club, he was also one of the best players on the pitch, with a lot of good passes here and there. He also showed high quality against Barcelona, when he was able to produce an absolute clinic in defence without committing a single foul.
Every fan wanted the club to sign a world-class centre-back to pair with Ibrahima Konate. No one expected Huijsen to perform the way he is performing, and no one was thinking that he could take the leap and become a first-choice starting centre-back for Real Madrid this season. Credit where credit is due: Huijsen has done exactly that, and hopefully that makes him want to continue this way for the foreseeable future.
If he is able to make certain adjustments and stay consistent the way he has been this season, there is no limit to what he can achieve with Real Madrid. He can easily become a starter for Spain as well, but it would require a lot more consistency than whatever we have seen from him so far this season, which is already quite a huge step forward.
