The 26/27 season is not just important for Real Madrid as a team, but it is also important for a number of players looking to bounce back after a number of disappointing individual seasons last year. The defender arrived from Bournemouth last summer for upwards of €60 million and frankly had quite the disappointing debut season, however so far this season he has looked a completely different player and that could come down to a number of different reasons.

The Spaniard is already proving to be the focal point of Jose Mourinho's backline and his partnership with summer signing Ibrahima Konate could finally bring the defensive stability that the team has been lacking the last few seasons. We all knew Huijsen has the talent to be a top class defender and it seems Jose Mourinho has already started working his magic to get his best out of him as well as a new attitude, one Real Madrid fans are already coming to love.
The 21-year-old has a reputation for being a 'chill guy' and not being one to make much noise or stir up trouble but after inheriting Sergio Ramos' number 4 shirt, we're seeing a newer, more intense and physical defender, the kind of player Real Madrid needs in their backline. The Spaniard had a heated dust up with Lautaro Martinez and Nicolo Barella in Real's 2-1 win over Inter Milan, something we rarely saw from Huijsen last season, showing early signs that he means business this year.
Jose Mourinho previously briefly worked with Huijsen during his time at Roma, so it is understandable that the Special One has been able to get the best out of the defender through the early parts of the season, helping him to take the next step and up his game to the next level.
The most important things for Real Madrid are that Huijsen can keep up this form and mentality all season and avoid injuries as that was his biggest downfall last year. So far the 21-year-old looks up to the task of being the centerpiece of the backline and the task of carrying the weight of the number 4 shirt and with this new intensity he's found, he's looking like the proper heir to such a historic shirt number.
