Dean Huijsen's red card basically decided Real Madrid's fate against Atletico Madrid in a 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon.
The red was deserved, the penalty was the right call and there isn't really anything you can take away from that incident, apart from the fact that he should be doing a lot better than he currently is.
However, despite the foul, despite showing some level of incompetence in that moment, Huijsen was not even the worst player on the pitch for Real Madrid.
Can you say that specific moment was the worst decision any Real Madrid player made on the pitch, or it was the one that had the biggest impact on the game? Definitely, but Huijsen was still not the worst player wearing white, despite being shown a red.
That tells fans two things: one is that Dean Huijsen was having a good game. He was performing well, generally speaking, and looked strong enough defensively to not have a moment like this in him.

However, another thing is that if there is a player who is shown red on any given day, chances are they were also probably the worst on the pitch because of that red. Real Madrid, despite losing Huijsen to a silly red card, still had worse players on the pitch. That is what infuriates many fans. If you look at it bar for bar, Vinicius Junior, Denzel Dumfries and Aurelien Tchouameni were all worse performers than the Spanish international on the night.
Yes, their bad decisions did not have the biggest impact on the match, which is why you could say Huijsen was the most negatively impacting player for Real Madrid because of the red, but generally speaking, their performances were much worse than Huijsen's.
Vinicius Junior did not do one thing right in that entire match. The things he was doing solidly - which were mostly defensive - were absent. Tchouameni was woeful alongside Fede Valverde in midfield, and he provided nothing to the team on either end of the pitch.
Denzel Dumfries, who was one of the worst players on the pitch, still is not showing one single reason why he should be starting over Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The one thing everyone was sure about with Dumfries was that he would be better defensively than the Englishman in the games that needed more physicality, but it is actually proving to be the opposite because Trent would have done much better defensively, as well as provided the team with some good passing range and creativity with the ball, which was also desperately lacking from the game.
You can blame Dean Huijsen all you want - and rightfully so - but calling him the worst player on the pitch, despite the red, is both wrong and simply worrying, because what does that say about the rest of Real Madrid's players?
