Real Madrid are smitten with the idea of bringing Michael Olise to the club this summer transfer window, and while Madridistas will beg that their plans to. bring in Olise have nothing to do with Vinicius Junior leaving with one year left on his contract, there is no question that the left footed Bayern Munich superstar can be the final piece to the puzzle so that Real has an attack as potent as the BBC were in the 2010s.
Olise had a great World Cup overall, but the Ballon d'Or candidate struggled badly in his final meaningful game, a 2-0 loss to Spain. New Real Madrid star left back Marc Cucurella and the entire Spanish defense stymied Olise that night, as Olise worked hard for his team and created a couple of chances but had a pretty minimal impact overall, offering zero goal threat of his own.
While there have been valid criticisms of Olise after he failed to look like a 200 million euro player against the Spanish national team, there have been strong defenses of the 24 year old. Among them is unsurprisingly his (now former) French national team manager Didier Deschamps.
There are no worries about Michael Olise
The French legend told the media, via iMiaSanMia, "I think you're being a bit harsh. He wasn't at his best against Spain, just like some of the others. He's still got plenty of room to improve. Of course he'll get even better. The big occasion [World Cup semifinal] and the emotional side of it are also a factor. But if there's one player who truly broke through at this World Cup, it's him. And on top of that, he's a genuinely great person. He will reach even greater heights. Sometimes things just don't click, and you also have to give credit to the opponent. I'll use Dayot Upamecano as an example. Now he's an absolute monster, but it took him time to get there too."
And that is exactly how Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who is the driving force behind the club's desire to sign Michael Olise this summer 2026 transfer window, will feel about the way Olise played against Spain.
Yes, he struggled, but as Didier Deschamps said, he had a great World Cup overall. He just ran into a very difficult opponent, and as Deschamps added, he is still growing as a player. While Olise is further along and more consistent than his Bayern and French teammate Dayot Upamecano was as a young player, people forget that he has only been at the elite level with Bayern for two seasons. Real Madrid and Flo will see things that way, too, and because of his high character, they will back him to succeed in these big matches in the future. After all, he had no problems with shredding Real Madrid in the European Clasico in the Champions League knockouts; there are few occasions bigger than that.
