After a quality performance in a surprise start last weekend when Real Madrid dominated Malaga 4-0, Eduardo Camavinga soaked up the praise from manager Jose Mourinho and then got another start in arguably more surprising fashion, with Mou calling the number of the unwanted center midfielder in his XI against one of La Liga's better teams, Real Betis.
Camavinga was shocking. Even for a player many Real Madrid fans had already decided they were done with last season after his displays against La Liga's weaker sides helped them drop points that led to their title loss to arch rivals Barcelona, Cama was atrocious.
He lost the ball so frequently in the middle of the park that you had to wonder if he was a Real Betis player in disguise. Camavinga is also usually a good ball winner for Real Madrid even in games in which he struggles, but he did not win a single tackle or generate a return of possession for Madrid; he was a huge reason why the Merengues were totally overrun by the Verdiblancos in the middle of the Benito Villamarin.
Eduardo Camavinga was a major flop vs. Betis
It was just one game, but in the context of how Eduardo Camavinga has failed to develop over the last three to four seasons since initiailly shining as a rookie Madridista in 2021/22 when he won the Champions League, it is not surprising but still disheartening.
Camavinga was great against Malaga, who were just promoted from La Liga. He was far, far less great against a Real Betis side that has enough talent to be in the Champions Leaugue every season for the next three to five years.
Against credible competition, Camavinga was a tremendous liability and a not insignificant part of why Real Madrid lost and were totally blanked out of the score sheet. Camavinga was worse than a zero in terms of his attacking prowess and creation, and he was really a negative on the offensive side of the ball for Real Madrid.
The Frenchman only kept his place because he begged to stay, and, so far, he is not doing anything to make Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid to think anything other than selling him the next chance they get. His Malaga performance was encouraging, but against a real test in the league, Camavinga proved who he really is and has been for the last few seasons in the Spanish capital: a man simply not up to the highest of standards.
