There have been rampant rumors about the potential for Real Madrid center midfielder Eduardo Camavinga to leave the club this summer transfer window. Camavinga is still only 23 years old and immensely talented, but Madrid are beginning to wonder if they will ever see the Frenchman truly blossom as a superstar in world football while at their club.

The box to box No. 8 has not been able to nail a starting role at the club, as Jude Bellingham and Fede Valverde are both better wide center midfielders than him. Meanwhile, Camavinga has been a borderline disaster when played as a No. 6, failing to show the positioning, soft skills, or preparation to succeed in a role that would be up for grabs against countryman Aurelien Tchouameni.

Frustrations with Camavinga reached a boiling point after his silly red card effectively cost Real Madrid their 2025/26 Champions League season against Bayern Munich, their European Clasico rivals, in the quarterfinals.

Eduardo Camavinga did not let boos get to him

So in his first game since the incident on Tuesday night vs. Deportivo Alaves, Real Madrid fans roundly serenaded Eduardo Camavinga with whistles, jeers, and boos from the very moment he stepped foot onto the pitch.

But in a move that shows his character and the constantly reported desire from the Spanish press that he wants to stay with Real Madrid despite the rumors, Camavinga responded by going out of his way to applaud the Madridistas at the Santiago Bernabeu after the game, as captured by Guillermo Rai of The Athletic.

In truth, Camavinga had a mixed 30 minute cameo off the bench, because while he put his body on the line for some nice blocks, he continued to show sloppiness with his passing and an inability to truly help Real Madrid close out and control games.

Camavinga is going to have to save his Real Madrid career by balling out in limited minutes to close the season, and that may not be enough for him. But with moves like this and showing the quality of his character, Cama can bring an X-Factor to the table to try and convince Florentino Perez and the club to give him one last chance under a new manager with fresh ideas on how to utilize and develop him in the 2026/27 season.

There is a great player buried somewhere in Camavinga, and for as disappointing as he has been this season, he has the strength of character to turn it around.
