Real Madrid star center midfielder Eduardo Camavinga has looked like anything but a star this season, particularly in recent weeks. The Frenchman was left with egg on his face after a disastrous red card against Bayern Munich that dimmed all hopes of a Real Madrid comeback against their great European Clasico rivals.

But even before that infamous moment in the Champions League quarterfinals, Camavinga was frustrating the fans and the club, including getting visible dirty looks from his teammates, for a host of crucial errors and lapses of concentration that cost Real Madrid points against the lesser clubs in La Liga.

Camavinga joined Real Madrid as a dream signing in 2021 with a lot of fanfare, and it was he, not Kylian Mbappe, who came from Ligue 1 to deliver a Champions League title for Real Madrid with his clutch performances in multiple Remontadas.

Eduardo Camavinga may not make the World Cup

But since then, Camavinga has shown disturbingly little growth - and even signs of regresion this season. Not only is Cama's future at Real Madrid up in the air this summer and at the full mercy of Florentino Perez liking him personally, but his poor campaign is also having consequences for the French national team.

According to a report from Telefoot, via Madrid Xtra, Eduardo Camavinga is now in serious doubt for the French national team at the World Cup in North America this summer. His place in the squad was once seen as a foregone conclusion, but now that he is playing so poorly and tanking his stock at Real Madrid, France are beginning to have a rethink of things.

So now, in these final weeks of the 2025/26 La Liga season as trophy less Real Madrid seek to save face in Spain, Camavinga is not just playing for his Real Madrid job and future. The former Rennes sensation is also in a last ditch bid to spare his spot with the French national team for a shot at all the glory with the back to back World Cup finalists.

Camavinga, on the merit of his play this season, does not deserve a spot. On the merit of his talent, he is a shoe in. But football is about what you are doing in the here and now; it is not about the theoretical. And if the rumors about his Real Madrid future did not light a fire under him to do better against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, then Madridistas will be skeptical that Les Bleus will offer much more motivation.
