Kylian Mbappe was a late scratch for the battle between Real Madrid and Barcelona at the Spotify Camp Nou, pulling up with an apparent aggravation of his hamstring injury in the very last minutes of the final training session before the game. Given there were reports that Alvaro Arbeloa was planning on leaving him on the bench anyway and the preceding drama around the injury, Madridistas were skeptical, wondering if this was the case of the controversial Frenchman trying to save face to avoid being on the bench - or even play this game entirely.
Because Real Madrid are dead men walking. Their loss of the La Liga title is but a mere formality, as this club is in shambles with embarrassing controveries off the pitch, both those involving Mbappe and the other players like captain Fede Valverde and woefully disappointing players like Aurelien Tchouameni, Alvaro Carreras, Antonio Rudiger, Dani Ceballos, and Dani Carvajal.
Well, Real Madrid, as anyone would expect, did not take long to fall apart against a much more cohesive Barcelona team under Hansi Flick. In 20 minutes, they were down 2-0 after brilliant goals, including a free kick from Marcus Rashford that will be played at the expense of Madridistas for years to come.
Kylian Mbappe continues to do himself no favors
After Real Madrid were down 2-0 to Barcelona, Kylian Mbappe posted on Instagram from the comfort of his home a "Hala Madrid" with the scoreline visible, via Madrid Xtra, and the Real Madrid fans who are upset with Mbappe were absolutely incensed by this post.
They are questioning why Mbappe posted this when Real Madrid were down and not at the beginning of the game if he were genuine in his sentiment to want the team to win. But by posting at 2-0, Madridistas feel like this is a petty shot at the team and the argument that Real Madrid are better without Mbappe.
That argument that Real Madrid are better off came after they took out Manchester City in the Champions League without him but lost to Bayern Munich with him. They also won comprehensively against Espanyol 2-0 a week ago without Mbappe, whereas they struggled against Mallorca, Girona, and Real Betis with him.
The analysis that Kylian Mbappe is the biggest problem at Real Madrid is a bit reductive, and the performance against Barcelona has highlighted the reality that the entire team stinks and more players than Mbappe are causing problems. But Mbappe can troll or laugh all he wants, but he is a part of the problem, too. So is his character. Because the fans are right. It is telling that he made this post with them losing and never did this when they were tied in this game or in the other games when they were winning without him.
