Enzo Fernandez has been wanting to move to Real Madrid from Chelsea for months now, pining openly in the media for a move to the Santiago Bernabeu with former PSG star Javier Pastore, his agent, helping him. Liam Rosenior's poor coaching and the overall dysfunction at Chelsea helped lead to that decision, but, now, Enzo looks more likely to stay after the Blues hired Real's old manager, Xabi Alonso, who was once one of the best players in the world in the Argentinian's same position.

But the real reason why the Enzo talk has fallen apart is because Real Madrid said so. Even though both Florentino Perez and Jose Mourinho seemed highly interested in him and were wanting a new No. 6, they released a statement stating that they are not interested in the Chelsea star and then went ahead and surprisingly extended Aurelien Tchouameni's contract through the 2030/31 season despite the Frenchman coming off a very poor 2025/26 season.

At the 2026 World Cup, Fernandez is doing his best to show Real Madrid that they are making a huge mistake by not spending the 120-150 million euros that Chelsea are looking for. After coming so close to scoring from range twice, Enzo scored the game tying goal with a beautiful effort from distance, striking the ball with both velocity and curl to make sure Jordan Pickford had no chance.

Enzo Fernandez has Real Madrid quality

It was the kind of magical, game changing moment in the clutch with everything on the line that piques Real Madrid's interest. Jose Mourinho appeared to be looking at Enzo as his top choice earlier this transfer window before committing to Aurelien Tchouameni out of the blue, and Enzo wants Jose to know that this is the caliber of player he could be getting along with Tchou - or instead, if Xabi Alonso were to insist on him coming back the other way.

In addition to another clutch goal, even better than the one against Egypt, Fernandez led the team with 84 pass attempts, completing 97.1 percent of them. He controlled the game for Argentina, played good defense, and ensured that England were never in control of space on or off the ball, regardless of them having the 1-0 lead to begin with.

With one swift strike, Fernandez changed the game for Argentina, but his overall bossing of the game against Declan Rice and England is what will truly define him. Maybe Mourinho will reconsider Real's stance on Enzo, because despite the Tchou contract, it is not too late to go for another No. 6; Eduardo Camavinga is still a possible sale to be sorted.
