In 2022, Real Madrid had the opportunity to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund at a discount rate, as everything had been pre-arranged among Dortmund (a club with whom Real have a great relationship with), Haaland's camp, and president Florentino Perez. But Real were so focused on Kylian Mbappe, who had given his word to Madrid that winter window, that they let Haaland go to Manchester City instead. Mbappe never came and a year later, Haaland finally led Man CIty to the Champions League crown and treble.
Since then, Haaland has only cemented his status as the best pure goal scorer in the world, and after two seasons without a trophy, Real Madrid fans have been wondering if the club made the right choice all those years ago when Haaland bought a house in Marbella in preparation for a dream move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
The flirting in the media has never stopped either. Beyond Enrique Riquelme's bizarre contract wave on television during the presidential elections, the Spanish and even English media have always whispered about the possibility of Haaland one day leaving Manchester City, the club of his father, for a new challenge in La Liga at the world's biggest club.
Erling Haaland and the Real Madrid dream are still alive
And now, to fuel the rumors just before Haaland's massive brace to sink Vinicius Junior and Brazil, his father Alfie went out of his way to NOT rule out a possible future transfer to Real Madrid.
Erling Haaland's father said of his son to DAZN Espana, via Fabrizio Romano, “Real Madrid move? He’s very happy at Manchester City and has a long contract. We’re waiting for the new season… but anyone would want to play for Madrid. You never know what can happen in football”.
So by saying "anyone" would want to play for Real Madrid, Alfie Haaland is very much including his son in that. He is careful to say that Erling is under contract for a while and is "very" - not just a little - happy at Manchester City, but by leaving the door open in this way with that last statement, the Haalands are very much winking at Real Madrid after a huge tournament.
Nothing is going to happen now, of course. Florentino Perez is very committed to Kylian Mbappe, who is having a phenomenal World Cup in his own right. But should Real Madrid want a new striker or things change with either Vinicius Junior or Mbappe, Haaland is making it known that he is right here. Madridistas have thought for years that Haaland will one day play for them, and that is not changing now.
