In 2022, Real Madrid had the opportunity to make their Champions League winning squad even stronger by bagging Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, as everything was already arranged between Aki Watzke of Dortmund and Real's president Florentino Perez with Erling dreaming of a big move to the Santiago Bernabeu to become the heir to Karim Benzema.
But Real Madrid thought they were getting Kylian Mbappe as a free agent after the Frenchman shook Florentino's hand that winter to agree to a deal. Instead, Mbappe went back on his word, Haaland joined Manchester City and brought them the Champions League and treble in 2022/23, and Real Madrid eventually ended up with Mbappe in 2024 after winning the Champions League and La Liga again.
However, since Real have not won any trophies since Mbappe's free agent arrival in 2024 whereas PSG are now on back to back Champions League triumphs, there is a tinge of regret in the air about missing out on Haaland, who added to his legend with an insane brace to sink Vinicius Junior, Casemiro, and Brazil's Real Madrid contingent in the Round of 16 of the World Cup.
Erling Haaland still wants Real Madrid
Now, Fabrizio Romano is reporting, after Erling Haaland's dad's comments to DAZN Spain opened the door for a future transfer, that the Manchester City superstar still has Real Madrid on his mind in the future. The Norwegian international is not going to move this summer, Fab assures, but a future move is a real possibility for the 25 year old record breaking Premier League striker.
Real Madrid are not in the market for a starting No. 9 since Kylian Mbappe has that role down, and the goal is to sign Vinicius Junior to a new contract before it expires in 2027. And moreso than Haaland, Florentino Perez and Real Madrid want Bundesliga superstar right winger Michael Olise to finally get a talented left footer; they have not had one on the wings since Gareth Bale's decline around 2018.
But how can you pass up on Haaland? He has a close friendship with two pillars of the team in Vincius Junior and Jude Bellingham, and his work rate and finishing, as well as his profile as a true 9, would actually fit the team better than Mbappe. He is also more of a team player. Haaland has a house in Marbella and has always left the door open to Real Madrid - and the Madridistas would still love to have this wonderful character in their history one day.
