Luka Modric is on his way out of Real Madrid after the Club World Cup, and it truly marks the end of an era. A beautiful and glorious era, I must say.

Modric’s departure is the result of many factors, one of which is the belief that his continued presence would hinder the development of younger midfielders. It’s not something I personally agree with, but it is what the club seems to believe.

Perhaps it was time to move on from the great, but another year would not have hurt. Especially when Modric was clearly the best Real Madrid midfielder last season, despite his age.

Modric always made it clear that he wanted to continue at Real Madrid and retire wearing white. But recent developments have made that dream impossible. Without a doubt, the midfielder still has a few years of top-level football left in him, and he can finish strong elsewhere if not in Madrid.

Fabrizio Romano confirms Luka Modric’s next destination

Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Luka Modric will be on his way to Italy after the Club World Cup and will sign as a new AC Milan player, with medicals scheduled in July.

According to Romano, the verbal agreement between the player and the club is already in place, and only the formal documentation remains.

Everything now points toward Modric joining AC Milan for next season. Why exactly AC Milan, you may ask?

Because the Rossoneri check all the boxes for Modric. It is a top-level club with real ambitions to win. One major reason the Croatian chose Milan over other clubs is that his Croatian idol, Zvonimir Boban, was an icon at the Italian side.

But there’s another reason. And this one will melt the hearts of Real Madrid fans.

According to a recent report, the prime reason for choosing AC Milan was to avoid facing Real Madrid. Since Milan will not play in any European competition next season, Modric can avoid the emotional burden of playing against the club that turned him from a boy into a man.

This is a tough transfer to process. Even imagining Modric in a shirt that is not white is difficult. But I think we won’t have to imagine for too long.
