Real Madrid are already set to bring in two world-class defenders to their ranks, as Florentino Perez has told the fans he has sealed the deals for Inter Milan right back Denzel Dumfries and Liverpool free agent central defender Ibrahima Konate whenever Florentino is officially confirmed as the president following elections against Enrique Riquelme (assuming the favorite wins, of course).

But Real Madrid are not going to stop there. With Jose Mourinho coming in and defensive wounds festering for years, even when they won two Champions League titles under the legendary Carlo Ancelotti, Los Merengues are planning an overhaul of their defense.

According to more information from transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, the next bet on the market for Florentino Perez and the Royal Whites is a left footed center back. Real Madrid want a profile who can start at center back and left back to help upgrade two pressing positions of need at the club, and the two options they highly appreciate are Arsenal's Riccardo Calafiori and Manchester City's Josko Gvardiol. But Real understand signing either player from a Premier League title contender will be difficult.

Real Madrid are after Premier League stars

Florentino is promising a Galactic move outside of the Premier League next, which many assume to be either Vitinha or Joao Neves from the PSG midfield, but Real Madrid are also going for many more moves than that and could make at least five world-class signings by the time the summer 2026 transfer window is done.

Although Calafiori did not have his strongest 2025/26 campaign, the Italian international still played an important role in Arsenal winning the Premier League with his versatility and defensive quality, and before that, he was one of the best players in Europe with his game-changing ability on the ball for fairytale side Bologna.

Josko Gvardiol is even better and was on the Real Madrid transfer radar at RB Leipzig before they unwisely let Manchester City waltz in unchallenged to the signature of the young Croatian star. Still only 24 years old despite many years of elite level experience, Gvardiol is a bomber on the left flank or through the middle with unique technical and athletic qualities on the ball and defensively.

Real Madrid are still multiple pieces away from having one of the best defenses in Europe, and that clearly appears to be the next big task for Florentino and Mourinho in conjunction together this summer transfer window.
