Real Madrid recently signed Aurelien Tchouameni to a contract extension to keep the defensive midfielder around through the 2030/31 season, but that has not stopped them from finally showing real interest in Rodri.
The Manchester City star is the best player on the market in his position and probably the best player in the position in the world, which was a point proven in the World Cup by his sheer dominance against both Tchouameni and a previous Real Madrid transfer target, Enzo Fernandez.
Before the World Cup, Rodri was linked to Real Madrid, but Florentino Perez, for some reason, kept rejecting the transfer. Rodri publicly declared his desire to move to the Santiago Bernabeu permanently during the March international break, and he has steadily been pushing harder and harder to join Madrid, viewing it as his dream and rebuffing Manchester City's efforts at an extension.
Florentino hasn't given the green light
Recently, Real Madrid executives have shown more interest in Rodri following his World Cup brilliance, and they have seemingly gotten Florentino Perez finally on board with bringing the 30 year old Spanish international back to La Liga.
But according to reporting from Fabrizio Romano, Florentino still has not given his final approval on a Rodri transfer. Romano said, via Madrid Xtra, “Keep an eye on Rodri and Real Madrid. Real Madrid have been in contact with Rodri's agents this week. Final approval from Florentino Perez is needed to start negotiations with Man City.”
Real Madrid fans have been wondering how Yan Diomande could be done so quickly but Rodri has not, and maybe this is why. Florentino is still dragging his feet on Rodri, and maybe he is getting cold feet or is still not as convinced as the rest of the members of the Madrid clan are.
In any case, there is still a lot of optimism around Rodri joining Real Madrid, regardless of Man City's threats in the media about being willing to hold onto the star player until his contract runs out in 2027. But Real Madrid fans have suspected that Florentino still has hesitations about the player but is willing to go along with the Rodri move because the others want him, and he has definitely shown, as with this latest Yan Diomande deal, that he is willing to sign the players Jose Mourinho wants. And Mou wants Rodri in his corner for the 2026/27 season as the midfield anchor.
