Real Madrid recently signed starting defensive midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni to a contract extension through the 2030/31 season, and despite continued interest from Premier League powerhouses like Manchester United, Jose Mourinho has maintained that the Frenchman is crucial to his plans and not going anywhere this summer.
Los Merengues, though, are being increasingly linked to Rodri again, because even though president Florentino Perez is still against the addition of the 30 year old midfielder, it seems like everyone else wants him. The fans, other executives, and even the players are interested in Rodri, whose name has become a bigger topic around the Valdebebas after an insane World Cup campaign in which he shut down Tchouameni and Enzo Fernandez in pivotal World Cup knockout stages matches en route to usurping Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi for the Golden Ball of the tournament.
Perez constantly rejecting Rodri has been a frustrating storyline for some Madridistas, and while it sounds like some of the people in the locker room have been able to convince Rodri to change his mind, he does have reason for skepticism.
Rodri may not be cheap
Because according to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are going to ask for big money in order for Real Madrid to sign Rodri this summer. So even if Real execs are able to get Florentino Perez to change his mind on the Spanish national team superstar, the Merengue club may not even be able to make the deal financially possible.
Now, Real have a lot of money, so it seems a bit weird about the deal not being financially possible, but since Florentino is so keen on Michael Olise as a bigger Galactico for the team, he has to earmark 200-250 million euros of potential expenditure if he REALLY wants the Frenchman to come this summer transfer window.
That is one aspect of it, but sometimes what is financially possible is not what is always economically smart. Because as great as Manchester City's starting No. 6 is, if the Citizens are asking Madrid to pay in excess of 50 million euros for a 30 year old with only one year left on his contract who is clearly dreaming of Madrid, paying 60 million euros now instead of signing him for free next year makes very little economic sense. And if that is indeed the case, then Florentino's hesitancy of signing Rodri this summer is more than valid.
