Eduardo Camavinga had some brutal performances at the end of the 2025/26 La Liga season that ensured Real Madrid would not win the league over Barcelona for a second year in a row. It is hard to pin the entire failures of a highly disappointing Madrid team on one man, but Camavinga made costly mental errors against bottom tier competition in the Spanish division that were infuriating and led to the sort of dropped points that do cost top clubs the title.
Although Camavinga was crucial to a Champions League title in the 2021/22 season as a debuting Madridista, Real Madrid have seen no real growth from the young Frenchman in the years since then. And that is why Real made it clear in the final months of the 2025/26 campaign that he was playing for his job ahead of the summer transfer window. By not improving his displays, Cama is now expendable.
While Real Madrid have signed Aurelien Tchouameni to a new contract, Jose Mourinho has not given Camavinga the same positive signal. It is no secret that the Portuguese manager wants a big player to join the club in the midfield, and as Rodri's name swirls, Mou may be disappointed to find out Real can't make that move unless Cama goes.
Camavinga might have a target on his back
Per the latest information from Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United recently engaged in talks with Eduardo Camavinga, too, but despite that flattering interest from a club that loves to sign players from the Royal White quarter, the Frenchman still does not want to leave Madrid. He is determined to stay, and so nothing has really changed from that stand point.
While Jose Mourinho usually loves it when players dig their heels in and fight, he does not really see a fit for Camavinga in his plans. Mou has two better No. 8's in Fede Valverde and Jude Bellingham, and he also has to accommodate minutes for Aurelien Tchouameni and Arda Guler in different midfield roles. And then there is young prospect Thiago Pitarch, who totally outplayed Camavinga last season and is one of the young players Mourinho is most exciting to work with next season.
So if Camavinga is going to stay, he is going to be up against it and on a short leash with Mourinho, who does not seem to want him at the Bernabeu anyway. And if it costs Real Rodri, that will put another target on the young man's back.
