Javier Hernandez, better known as Chicharito, is one of the greatest Mexican players of all time and once followed in the foot steps of the even more legendary Mexican national team striker Hugo Sanchez by getting to play for Real Madrid.
It was only a one year loan in the 2014/15 La Liga season, but Chicharito still showed his quality sandwiched in between two incredible stints with Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen by being an asset for Madrid off the bench with seven La Liga goals. Madridistas have fond memories of those times and continue to track the career of the Mexican icon.
Out of nowhere, the 38 year old has a new gig in football besides being a pretty decent pundit for FOX Sports at the 2026 World Cup. After playing for historic Mexican side Guadalajara with just 3 goals in 35 games in the 2024/25 season and then not playing at all in the 2025/26 campaign, Chicharito has surprisingly found a new club in a very surprising place.
Chicharito signs with the fake Atleti
According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Javier Hernandez is coming back to the United States to play. But unlike from 2020 to 2023 when he followed in the foot steps of another former Real Madrid player, David Beckham, in playing for the LA Galaxy, Chicharito won't be in MLS at all.
Per Romano, Chicharito is signing a deal with Atletico Dallas, a new club in the second rate American league the USL Championship, as their first ever signing. Weirdly enough, even though Chicharito is 38, he won't actually start playing for Atletico Dallas until 2027 when the club actually starts up, but Romano says that he is joining them immediately to help get the sporting project started.
For many Real Madrid fans, they will look at Chicharito's signing as another cynical ploy by an American club to try and get some eyeballs on them, but most fans will hope that Chicharito has a great season and gives people more fond memories.
The problem with the move from a Madridista perspective is that while Atletico Dallas are not affiliated with bitter rivals Atletico Madrid, they took their logo and name in inspiration of the crosstown rivals of Real Madrid. Chicharito did not play long enough with Real to necessarily have to respect a border like that which is unofficial, but for a guy who still shows a lot of love to Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo, it does prevent most fans from truly rooting for this move 100 percent.
