Real Madrid are planning a major squad overhaul this summer, with priority being placed on the midfield. Ever since the retirement of Toni Kroos and the departure of Luka Modric the club has struggled to find a perfect balance in the midfield despite the sheer amount of talent at the managers disposal. As a result the club is keeping a close eye on the transfer market and have identified Manchester City midfielder Rodri as their ideal candidate. His situation at the Premier League club is ever changing and transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has provided a new update that plays perfectly into Real Madrid's hands.
As being reported by MadridXtra on X, Rodri and Manchester City have hit a significant stumbling block in negotiations over a new contract and their is now a big distance between the two sides. Real Madrid still hold a strong interest in the midfielder and believe it is only a matter of time before he joins but the haven't decided if they will fully go for him this summer, with the final decision to be made with Jose Mourinho.
Rodri to Real Madrid looking more and more like reality
When the midfield trio of Kroos-Casemiro-Modric finally came to an end many believed Real Madrid were in a fin situation given the amount of players they have at the club they could slot into their positions. The likes of Fede Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, Jude Bellingham, and Arda Guler would be able to fill in perfectly from the old trio, but that has been far from the case. The midfield lacks any fluidity, creativity, and composure leading the club to turn to the transfer market to solve their problems.
We all know the clubs long standing interest in Rodri and the club has stuck with him as their number one candidate to come in a be the problem solver, specifically in the role left by the retirement of Toni Kroos. The club views the Spaniard as the same profile as the German, a deep lying playmaker, who is cool and composed on the ball, with a passing range that can cover every inch of the pitch. To the hierarchy at the club he is the perfect candidate, however a move for him always seemed like a dream, until now.
With both the ongoing contract disputes between the two sides, as well as Pep Guardiola's departure from Manchester City, Rodri's future is now more up in the air than ever before, with everything falling perfectly into Real Madrid's hands.
How much a move for the Spaniard will cost remains unknown, with the 29-year-old currently valued at around €65 million, that's a pretty penny to pay for an aging player who is starting to struggle with injuries more often. Real could potentially consider a swap deal, as City have held interest in both Fede Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga in the past, so if the club wanted the could include either of them in a swap deal for Rodri, but as previously mentioned, Jose Mourinho will have the final say, and knowing Jose, who knows what he'll say.
