Real Madrid are going to need to sign center backs in the summer transfer market, and for many fans, the key is plural center backs to upgrade a defense that really has not been operating at the club's standard for the last several years, including when they won Champions League titles under guru Carlo Ancelotti.

Jose Mourinho will obviously not stand for a subpar defense, and his best center back, Eder Militao, has been stricken by severe injuries ever since the 2023/24 season. He will want multiple center backs to upgrade the team, and Florentino Perez sounds willing to enable his new manager to get the players in the positions he feels he needs, which is a change of pace from what his predecessors were afforded by the all powerful president of the club.

Former Liverpool central defender Ibrahima Konate has been on Real's radar for months, and he has now officially hit free agency after negotiations between himself and the Reds never quite got going. Konate had a dismal 2025/26 season by his standards in a difficult campaign for Liverpool as a whole, but on his day, he remains a world class center back.

Real Madrid have early competition for former Liverpool star

It is not just Real Madrid who are after Konate, nor is it only the other top clubs in European football ilke Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich who are in on the former RB Leipzig star. According to a report from transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Konate is even getting transfer proposals from the Saudi Pro League clubs trickling in the early going.

Per Fab, Konate will continue to weigh his options and formally assess all the offers on the table over the coming days. And once again, Romano reiterated that Real Madrid have always been interested in Konate, but they only cooled their efforts about six or seven months ago in order to show respect to their Champions League rivals.

Ibrahima Konate isn't as big of a dream target as Alessandro Bastoni, but since he is a free agent, that may be 80 million euros in transfer fees saved in comparison to Bastoni. And given Real's need for multiple star center backs, they could always spend big on someone like Bastoni or even Nico Schlotterbeck and then pluck Konate for free.

Of course, nothing is free in football, and as Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba can attest, even free agent center backs can get quite expensive with wages. And while the Saudi Pro League interest is surprising since Konate is still well below 30 with plenty in the tank and Champions Leagues to fight for, it's not necessarily a good thing that clubs that cannot hold a candle to Real's prestige are interested, as they can drive up Konate's price due to all that they can offer financially in wages.
