Real Madrid star right back Trent Alexander-Arnold is in a difficult moment of his career and entering a defining second season at the Santiago Bernabeu that will tell the world if he is a truly transcendent player or simply another member of the Hall of Very Good.
Trent was a legend for Liverpool who played a pivotal role in Champions League and Premier League titles, but he let his contract expire and made a dream move to the Santiago Bernabeu in the hopes that he would become larger than life, challenging himself at the biggest club in the world alongside best friend Jude Bellingham.
While Trent improved as the season went on and showed real quality with his passing ability, he did not convince as a world class right back and wasn't really challenged due to how terrible Dani Carvajal's final year in Madrid turend out.
Real Madrid love to push their biggest names
Although Real Madrid initially did not seem interested in signing a top right back, it appears Jose Mourinho and Florentino Perez may be changing that plan as they begin to work more closely together in preparation for Mou's unveiling as the new Madrid manager.
According to the latest information from Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid are considering three very interesting profiles for the right back position. Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries and Tottenham Hotspur's Pedro Porro, both of whom were key targets a few years ago, are back on the radar as big name signings from top clubs. And then Real Madrid have also scouted Ivan Fresneda, the young Spanish right back whom Real also watched years ago at Real Valladolid.
These are three very different players but all are Real Madrid quality. Fresneda is the least known, but he is one of the best defensive fullbacks in the world and is basically the heir to Porro as Sporting CP's starting right back.
Meanwhile, Denzel Dumfries is coming off another insane season as the Inter Milan wing back and is a mis match nightmare with elite athleticism and two way ability. Porro is also a great two way right back who can win the ball and create chances, and he was a huge reason why Tottenham managed to avoid relegation.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, at his best, is the best of these four right backs and on a different level, but Pedro Porro and Dumfries are honestly not far off. And Fresneda is mad underrated. By showing genuine interest in these three, Real could be giving Trent another push to be truly elite in 2026/27.
