Although he got injured and missed a couple of games, Real Madrid defensive midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni had a decent enough World Cup campaign until getting totally bossed in the midfield by the Spanish national team and their Golden Ball winner Rodri in the semifinals.
So despite Tchouameni receiving a pretty surprising contract extension through the 2030/31 season and a strong endorsement from Jose Mourinho, there are plenty of Real Madrid fans who believe the club should sign a better No. 6 than Tchou and are wanting the man who dominated the Frenchman in the semifinals, Rodri, to join despite the protests from president Florentino Perez.
But Tchouameni is a good player who could be even more useful to a team that isn't quite as strong as Madrid, which is why Manchester United continue to be linked with interest in the French national team this starter.
Aurelien Tchouameni is not leaving
Fabrizio Romano dropped another update on Tchouameni's situation, and he has made it clear that Jose Mourinho wants Tchou to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu. Per Fab, Mourinho was indeed the one who pushed for Real Madrid to renew the player's contract and believes in him. So Tchouameni is going to be staying regardless of the transfer rumors and nothing has changed since Mou signed the player to an extension.
There are times when teams sign a player to an extension to keep their transfer value high so that they are not an expiring contract or expiring within two years, but that was not the case with the move Real Madrid made to extend Tchouameni. Mourinho genuinely believes in his qualities as both a player and a person, and he thinks he can get more out of Tchou than any of the managers before him did.
It is a bold call in a way, because then Real Madrid would need Eduardo Camavinga to finally accept an exit out if the club were to sign a new defensive midfielder, which, for many fans, the dream pick would be Rodri.
As for Manchester United, they seem to love signing players from Real Madrid. They signed Raphael Varane and Casemiro from them in recent years, and now they are after both French center midfielders Camavinga and Tchouameni. And while Camavinga is expendable, Tchouameni is not in the eyes of Mourinho, and, at this point, neither are likely to join the Red Devils in the summer 2026 transfer window.
