When Xabi Alonso was appointed as the new manager of Real Madrid, many expected him to be the man to take Los Blancos back to their glory days on top. However, following a fallout with some of the players in the team he was sacked after just eight months and Castilla manager Alvaro Arbeloa was appointed as interim manager while the club searched for their next full-time manager. Real have drawn up a list of potential candidates with names like Jurgen Klopp and Massimiliano Allegri among the candidates. However, club president Florentino Perez has his eyes set on one man, one that Real Madrid fans are very familiar with.
As being reported by David Ornstein on X, Jose Mourinho is the preferred candidate of Florentino Perez to become the new manager at Real Madrid next season. Support for Mourinho is not universal throughout the club however the president ultimately has the final say and he is the driving force behind bringing The Special One back to the Bernabeu.
Florentino Perez picks The Special One as his next manager
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had long been the number one candidate however with it looking more and more likely that the German won't be returning to management anytime soon, Florentino Perez has shifted his attention to a reunion with one of the most iconic managers in Real Madrid's history.
Mourinho took charge of Real Madrid from 2010-2013, winning three trophies during his time in charge including the 2011/12 La Liga title and the 2010/11 Copa del Rey. During his famous 11/12 season Mourinho led the team to a record 100 points and a still standing La Liga record of 121 goals scored in a single season, finishing the season with a +89 goal difference. Mourinho departed the club following the 12/13 season and has since bounced around Europe managing some of the games biggest clubs. One big question still remains, how would Mourinho fair at a much changed Real Madrid almost 15 years later?
A lot has changed at Real Madrid since Jose's departure but the biggest change is with the players. Jose managed Real Madrid during their Galacticos era, with players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, and Iker Casillas in the squad and was to get them all to coexist despite the egos all star players have. And yet somehow this current squad somehow has bigger egos that those names previously mentioned and we've seen a number of times this season they struggle to put their egos aside to coexist as a unit. If Xabi Alonso wasn't able to control the players, why would Jose be able to when he is a more strict manager than Alonso, and some players won't like that (Vinicius).
It's not an understatement to say that Real Madrid's managerial appointment this summer is one of the biggest decisions the club will make in many years. Appointing the wrong manager will set the club back even further than they already are, and following back-to-back trophyless seasons, the club can't afford to go back further. Mourinho has a €5 million buy-out at Benfica and that could be one of the most important €5 million Real Madrid will ever spend.
