One of the biggest talking points at Real Madrid during the offseason was the presidential election between Florentino Perez and Enrique Riquelme. Perez ran on his history and legacy at the club, whereas Riquelme ran on bringing new, fresh ideas to the club, pointing out a number of problems in the team after the disastrous back-to-back trophyless seasons.
It should surprise no one that Florentino Perez ended up winning, and after winning promised big things were coming for Real Madrid and that sweeping changes were on the horizon to bounce back from the last two seasons.
However, that has not happened at all, and things are in an even worse place than they were before the elections, with many now looking back on Enrique Riquelme promises and realizing he was onto something, and Florentino Perez has been proving him right based on the early stages of the season.
Real Madrid should have listened to what Enrique Riquelme was selling
When you look at everything Florentino Perez did this summer, he basically did the opposite of whatever Riquelme said he was going to do had he won, and it has proven to be a disaster, with Perez pretty much proving Riquelme was right about everything he was saying on his campaign trail.
Some of the biggest points Riquelme emphasized were that the club needed to let go of the heirarchy system, sign Rodri, and bring in a manager other than Jose Mourinho, with Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp as his preferred options.
So, what did Florentino Perez do? He extended Vinicius until 2032, didn't sign Rodri, and brought in Jose Mourinho, all of which are proving to be disastrous decisions.
Vinicius has scored one goal in 10 games and has been in his worst form we have ever seen him in, Rodri went and joined Barcelona who are currently six points clear of Real Madrid and have been arguably the best team in Europe.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid's midfield struggles to even figure out what a football is, and Jose Mourinho hasn't fixed any of the problems of the last two years and looks to have lost his magic. The team is putting in poor performances one after another, while Arteta's Arsenal have picked up right where they left off last season.
More people should have listened to what Riquelme was saying cause based on what we've seen so far this season, he was right about everything. Major changes are needed at Real Madrid, and that's what Riquelme was saying the whole time, but everyone chose to stand by Florentino Perez, a decision that may well have set the club back even further than they already were heading into this season.
