Florentino Perez is ignoring a worrying Jose Mourinho trend for a reason

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is a stubborn man, and, for better or for worse, when he makes up his mind about something, he sticks to that plan. With Real Madrid heading for their equivalent of relegation in the form of back to back seasons without a trophy, Florentino is intent on taking the reigns himself and taking control this offseason.

Although there are many star players and even Jose Angel Sanchez on board with sticking with Alvaro Arbeloa, Florentino does not appear to be a fan of the former Real Madrid right back as a manager. As an assistant or a member of the staff, sure, but with his winning percentage and lack of star power to be a true Real Madrid level locker room presence, Arbeloa is very likely to be discarded in favor of a bigger name in the manager's chair.

And the name the Real Madrid president is fixated on, even more than Jurgen Klopp, is Jose Mourinho. Though Mou is wisely downplaying the links while under contract with Benfica, everyone with an Internet connection can see the smoke coming out of their router when it comes to these Mourinho to Real Madrid reunion links.

Jose Mourinho is risky business

Real Madrid already know how volatile Mourinho is, and Florentino Perez may want that little bit of fire and someone willing to challenge the egoes in the squad. He may not even worry that Mourinho is lasting less long at each successive stop with even less success to speak of, Roma notwithstanding.

Because Mourinho has looked more ordinary than special, including at Benfica, where his work in the Champions League knockouts against Real Madrid was less than exemplary. But to get them to that point, Jose Mourinho did have to pull off a little bit of late game magic against Madrid of his own, and that was probably enough of a spark for Perez.

Real Madrid want to make a splash. Perez is willing to ignore Mourinho's less than stellar track record at the elite level since his second stint at Chelsea in the 2010s and instead focus on the fact that he is bringing in someone with a big personality who isn't afraid to challenge people and raise the standard of the club. It's a trade off. Perez is probably well aware that Mourinho isn't one of the most successful managers in the world anymore like Pep Guardiola or Luis Enrique, but he probably wants Mourinho for what he stands for in terms of pedigree and what he can do as a figurehead.
