Real Madrid are on the verge of announcing Jose Mourinho as their new manager, and fans are excited tos ee the reunion of a coach who brought a winning spirit back to the club in the early 2010s, setting records in La Liga and also setting the stage for six Champions League titles for his successors Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane.
President Florentino Perez has always held Mourinho in high regard for what he did at the club in the previous decade, and the Special One holds a place in Perez's esteem that even more successful Real Madrid managers have not quite reached. Such is the nature of Mourinho's charisma and the value he will always have in the Spanish capital for saving the club from consecutive trophyless seasons already.
Real Madrid generally don't give much room to maneuver to managers when it comes to transfer policy or power at the club, and a lot of managers who were not able to succeed at the club had difficulties navigating the power structure and the idea that the club is always above the manager.
Jose Mourinho is getting the changes Real Madrid always needed
But Jose Mourinho is a special case, and with Real Madrid hurting badly in the locker room and on the pitch, Florentino Perez and the board are making serious concessions for the Portugues legend. Famously, Perez does not like to make January transfer windows, and he has also moved to a transfer strategy of only signing "future cracks" - gambling and spending big on young players he and the scouting team are obsessed with as future superstars.
Now, though, according to a report from Rodra of ESPN, via Madrid Xtra, Real Madrid are overhauling their transfer policy just for Jose. They will sign players who aren't just so called perfect targets the club prioritizes as current or future superstars like Kylian Mbappe and Eduardo Camavinga or Endrick. Instead, they will be willing to sign more experienced, established stars to fill out the depth of the squad and weak areas. They will also be more serious about making in season upgrades in the winter.
Real Madrid fans will believe it when they see it, but for many Madridistas, these changes are a sight for sore eyes, and they have been clamoring for the club to both be more active during the season and before the season to make necessary changes. Flo's stubbornness cost Carlo Ancelotti in the 2022/23 and 2024/25 seasons when Real Madrid could have potentially added more Champions League titles, but at least Mourinho now gets to benefit for the better of Los Blancos.
