We've come to everyone's favorite time of year, Ballon d'Or voting, the time when everyone starts voicing their opinions on who they think should be crowned the best player in the world for that season. Some years, there are a number of players who have a chance at winning it, while other times, there's a clear runaway favorite.
This year, there are two names on everyone's list: Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane. However, David Beckham shared his opinion, and it goes without saying that Real Madrid fans won't be too happy.
While speaking after Inter Miami's Campeones Cup victory, Beckham went on to back Real Madrid's biggest nemesis, Lionel Messi, to take home the Ballon d'Or this fall.
He said: "I think when you see him do things like this tonight, when you see him have the World Cup that he's had, it's not luck that he's being considered for the Ballon d'Or again. It's not luck because he was probably the best player in the tournament. He had an incredible year last year.
"He came into that tournament in the World Cup, and, 39 years old, to affect a World Cup and every game the way he did. He deserves to be considered for the Ballon d'Or. In my opinion, he should win it.
"You've got great players there, like Harry Kane, like Kylian Mbappe, like Jude Bellingham and others. But you know, when you're talking about Leo, I'm his biggest supporter."

While David Beckham backing the player that plays for his club makes all the sense in the world, when looking at the broader picture of last season, surely he can't be serious? The Ballon d'Or is meant for the best player in the world, not the best player at the World Cup.
Messi simply wasn't that, and the best players in the world play in Europe's top leagues; respectfully, Messi is in the MLS, where he will obviously put up lots of goals and assists. So while he may have had a good season in his league, the seasons Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane produced are far more deserving of the Ballon d'Or.
Mbappe put up 42 goals and seven assists in 44 games for Real Madrid, as well as his 10 goals and three assists in the World Cup, and Harry Kane bagged a mind-boggling 61 goals and seven assists in 51 matches for Bayern Munich, as well as six goals and one assist in the World Cup. With all due respect, either of those two is a season deserving of the Ballon d'Or, not Messi's.
As mentioned earlier, it makes sense that David Beckham would back a player who plays for the club he owns, especially after they just won a trophy, but it is also surprising that he is backing Messi over a player who played for one of his former clubs and a player from the same country as him.
Who exactly will be taking home the award still remains up for much debate, but unfortunately for Beckham, it doesn't look like it will be Messi. Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe are neck and neck for the award, with Lamine Yamal also trying to make his case. The award will be given out on October 26th, with many Real Madrid fans hoping it will finally make its return to the Bernabeu.
